CAPE WALKING HOLIDAY

Cape Walking Holiday

The holiday has been designed to appeal to walkers of all levels. This stunningly beautiful and scenically diverse area of North West Scotland remains relatively unknown and undiscovered. Explore a different aspect every day - coast, beach, moor land, mountain and island. Our Instructors will guide you throughout the week.

What you can expect from your week with Cape Adventure…

Saturday
We will meet you at Rhiconich Hotel at 3.00pm. Drive to our car park, unload your equipment into our vehicle, then a 10 minute walk on footpath to Cape Adventure. (Please note it is not possible to drive to our base.) Settle in, discuss the programme and meet our instructors for a cup of tea. Later an introductory walk to familiarise yourself with the surrounding hills.

Sunday
Ben Stack (721m) and Strath Stack

A circular walk. Climb Ben Stack from the north side and descend southwards towards Achfary. Near the base of the mountain, pick up the path along Strath Stack, passing through woodland that leads to the upper Glen and back to your starting point.

Monday
Quinag (808m)

Climb one of the varied routes to reach Quinag's summit. En route you may see ptarmigan, golden eagles and mountain hares. Once at the top take in spectacular views that stretch as far south as the Isle of Skye.

Tuesday
Lochmore to Kylestrome or Arkle (787m)
Walk the deer-stalking path from Lochmore through the pine forest up onto the moor, taking in the expanse of hill and glen. Then descend gently to Kylestrome, looking westward, to Quinag and out across The Minch to the Outer Hebrides. Or experience the Quartzite massif of Arkle, with its classic features, sculptured by extreme forces of nature over millions of years.

Wednesday
Handa Island or Benn Spoinnaidh (772m) and Cranstackie (800m)

Begin with a boat trip across the Sound to the spectacular bird reserve, Handa Island. The walk starts on the sweeping sandy beaches of Handa's southern tip and crosses the island to the northern sandstone cliffs and great stack, home to thousands of puffins, guillemots, razorbills, shags, cormorants and fulmars. Or climb Corbett, Benn Spoinnaidh, with views northwards over the sands of the Kyle of Durness and out to Cape Wrath. To the northeast you can see the Orkney Islands on a clear day. Walk the ridge dipping to 550m and up to the peak of Cranstackie; descend to the shepherd's croft at Rhigolter.

Thursday
Sandwood Bay or The Foinaven Ridge (908m)

Follow the cliff top from Sheigra, the most northwesterly settlement of mainland Britain to Sandwood Bay with its wide sweep of golden sand. A former stopping-off point for Viking long ships. Return across the moor along the old peat track. Or walk the Foinaven Ridge, from Lone to Rhiconich. Enjoy its spectacular views to the Outer Hebrides to the west and deep into the ancient Dionnard Valley to the northeast. Descend to the Rhiconich Hotel to celebrate your week's achievements.

Friday
Depart after breakfast

N.B. The programme may vary due to weather conditions - we are flexible.
